We've developed some tools that suggest how federated wiki might evolve to support the evolution of casual collaborations into curated resources. My own neighborhood explorations have been my testbed.
We notice that the Library of Congress attaches generous CORS headers to jpg images which means they respond to drag-and-drop from their site to our factory. page

We squeeze images to 500 pixel width and save this in the page json. We also keep the source url on drag from the web and will retrieve this image if it is still available when double-click expanding.
